- Can you read this language comfortably?
क्या आप इस भाषा को आराम से पढ़ सकते हैं? - Do you live in a dominantly English-speaking country (eg. United Kingdom, Australia, U.S. etc.)?
क्या आप ज़्यादातर अंग्रेज़ी बोलने वाले देश में रहते हैं (जैसे यूनाइटेड किंगडम, ऑस्ट्रेलिया, U.S. वगैरह)? - Do you live in a high-income country (eg. Canada, Japan, Germany etc.)?
क्या आप ऐसे देश में रहते हैं जहाँ पैसे की क़ीमत बाक़ी देशों से ज़्यादा है (जैसे कनाडा, जापान, जर्मनी वगैरह)?
- Did you go to a school that followed English-mediated instruction?
क्या आप ऐसे विद्यालय में गए थे जहाँ अंग्रेज़ी में पढ़ाई होती थी? - Did you complete your higher education in English?
क्या आपने अपनी कॉलेज या महाविद्यालय की पढ़ाई अंग्रेज़ी में पूरी की? - Do you know of world-class higher education universities or even global/multinational corporations that do not use English as their medium of communication?

I have thought about these questions through my lived experiences, social observations and academic education. It makes me wonder why do we not focus on early multilingual and multiliteracy education approaches, instead of just English literacy?

As an English language educator— whether as a parent, teacher or service provider:

Remember that a multilingual and multiliteracy approach can be helpful in many ways! You can learn more than one language fluently, without another language getting in the way.
याद रखें कि मल्टीलिंगुअल और मल्टीलिटरेसी अप्रोच कई तरह से मददगार हो सकता है! आप एक से ज़्यादा भाषाएँ धाराप्रवाह सीख सकते हैं, बिना किसी दूसरी भाषा के आड़े आए।
When you equip your children or learners with strong English language and literacy, also do the same with your first language. Do this at the foundation level, preferably in their early years at home or school— the sooner, the better.

- Empathise, remember what it was like to be your child’s age. See the world from their eyes.
- सहानुभूति रखें, याद करें कि आपको बचपन में कैसा महसूस होता था। दुनिया को उनकी नज़र से देखें।
- Inform yourself about the needs— and wants— of your children.
- अपने बच्चों की ज़रूरतों− और इच्छाओं− के बारे में जानकारी रखें।
- Adapt your teaching or mentoring style to their aptitude for effectiveness.
- अपनी शिक्षण या मार्गदर्शन शैली को उनकी योग्यता के अनुसार ढालें ताकि सीखने में प्रभावशीलता बढ़े।
- Encourage them to become curious and independent learners.
- उन्हें जिज्ञासु और स्वतंत्र शिक्षार्थी बनने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करें।

- Identify your child’s strengths and challenges in— English literacy skills vs subject knowledge.
- अपने बच्चे की ताकत और चुनौतियों की पहचान करें− अंग्रेजी साक्षरता कौशल बनाम विषय ज्ञान मे।
- Keep yourself up to date with the best practices of teaching and learning a language.
- भाषा पढ़ाने और सीखने की सर्वोत्तम प्रथाओं से स्वयं को अद्यतन रखें।
- Instill core values to guide children through their curiosity with ethical and sound discernment.
- बच्चों को बुनियादी मूल्य सिखाएं जो उनकी जिज्ञासा का मार्गदर्शन नैतिक और ठोस विवेक के साथ स्वयं करने मे मदद करे।
Do’s / यह करें
- First and foremost, spark their curiosity for learning.
सबसे पहले और सबसे महत्वपूर्ण, सीखने के प्रति उनकी जिज्ञासा जगाएं। - Be a pillar, a strong support as they learn by asking them about the things they find challenging and help them be confident in their knowledge.
जब वे सीखें तो उनके लिए एक मजबूत आधार बनें, उनसे उन चीजों के बारे में पूछें जो उन्हें चुनौतीपूर्ण लगती हैं, तथा उन्हें अपने ज्ञान में आत्मविश्वास रखने में मदद करें। - If you are teaching at the beginner level, speak in your first/native language as it significantly impacts a child’s knowledge buidling and comprehension.
यदि आप शुरुआती स्तर पर पढ़ा रहे हैं, तो अपनी पहली/मातृभाषा में बात करें क्योंकि यह बच्चे के ज्ञान निर्माण और समझ पर महत्वपूर्ण प्रभाव डालती है। - Give them the space to make mistakes.
उन्हें गलतियाँ करने कि गुंजाइश दें।
Don’t / यह मत करें
- Never dismiss a child’s question, no matter how small or basic.
किसी भी बच्चे के प्रश्न को कभी भी नजरअंदाज ना करें, चाहे वह कितना भी छोटा-मोटा या सामान्य सवाल हो। - Do not become their saviour as they learn— ask them questions that lead to the answer. Do not feed them with answers to their problems unless it comes in the way of their confidence.
जब वे सीख रहे हों तो उनके रक्षक मत बनें —उनसे ऐसे प्रश्न पूछें जो उत्तर की ओर ले जाएँ। उनकी समस्याओं के उत्तर तब तक ना दें जब तक कि यह उनके आत्मविश्वास के आड़े ना आए। - At the beginner-level, don’t immerse children in the English language use alone. Approach English literacy with your own language, use translational strategies at foundational level.
शुरुआती स्तर पर, बच्चों को सिर्फ़ अंग्रेज़ी भाषा में ही ना डुबोएँ। अपनी भाषा के साथ अंग्रेज़ी साक्षरता की ओर बढ़ें, बुनियादी स्तर पर अनुवाद संबंधी रणनीतियों का इस्तेमाल करें।
